Market Research

  • Market Research is produced to discover deeper about your target market, in other terms your audience.

  • Example of market research questions :

  1. What genre are teenagers into?

  2. What is your favourite tv show and why (how old are you)?

  3. What kind of films would influence teenagers to be more positive?

  4. Do you watch more western films and tv shows in comparison to asian films?

  5. Do you notice the difference in gender of lead roles?

  6. Are most of the films you watch have a male lead role or female lead role?

  7. Do you notice any stereotypes in race when watching films you like?

  8. Are women sexualised in most films you watch?

  9. Are men seen to be showing significant masculinity in most films you watch (e.g shirtless with abs)?

  • Market Research is crucial when trying to attract your typical consumer, it can help improve the quality of your product by your customers feedback. It is important to do market research, especially in the media industry to ensure that you are ahead of your competitors by attracting the audience. Market research is in both forms of quantitative and qualitative data.

Advantages of Market Research

  • Gain a better perspective on your target market.

  • It helps prevent any opportunity costs risks - when having feedback from the public you know what decisions to make and avoid to ensure there is no waste of spending.

  • You become aware of new trends that are popular for your audience. This can make your product more appealing.

Disadvantages of Market Research

  • Market Research can be expensive.

  • It is time consuming.

  • The researcher could have been biased in the way questions were formed.

PRODUCTION RESEARCH

  • Production Research is when research focuses on the product itself rather than the audience. Production research’s main focal point is how the product is made. This is important so that producers can create a film for example which attracts an audience, they do this by doing product research to find out what features will make it appealing. It provides you with worthwhile information that can give you an insight on how to help keep your product financially stable. Personally I believe that this type of research is substantial when selling a product because it helps develop it in a useful manner.

  •  It is important to remember that your product must be:

  1. Suitable to your audience

  2. Attracts your audience

  3. Financial status of your product and how costly it is

  4. How could the product be improved
