Using Primary Quantitative Research :

Finding out quantitative data firsthand is valuable to understand  the numbers and statistics from your certain area. It is good to have secondary quantitative data which shows you information on a worldwide platform but it is also important to have focused data which can come from your local area. In this case, if I were to find out about if the people around me has watched The Duff and can answer more questions that will help with a research question of such I would sent out a survey online. This is a good example in receiving primary quantitative data quickly and easily, with the responses you are able to create tables, graphs, charts, etc.

Using Primary Qualitative Research

To research about primary qualitative data about this movie I would turn to the idea of focus groups. There would be two groups: one that didn’t enjoy the film and the other who include people who did enjoy the film. In this case I will be able to hear both arguments in sacred spaces where there is no argumentative language, both groups will be able to agree with each other and listen to each other's thoughts. This will allow no filter when each individual is speaking therefore there is less of a chance for the research to be faulty. Questions I would ask would be quite similar to my survey questions but having a focus  group will give me more detailed answers which is perfect for qualitative data.

IMDb Reviews

I have found that people’s thoughts on the film The Duff varies. A lot of reviews on IMDb shows that there are mixed emotions about the teen comedy, from the audience laughing at the main characters expense, feeling sympathetic or empathetic towards her and lastly feeling happy for her at certain scenes. Whereas others thought that the movie still had the major undertone of the classic stereotyping which wasn’t likeable, as well as people criticised how it wasn’t comparable to the book and that it didn’t follow the storyline. More or less the negative reviews were quite classic for most teen films of the century and if you were to research any other chick flicks that were books first they will also have similar criticisms. On the other hand the positive feedback was the majority and the reviews explained that even though there was an underlying stereotype within each character there was still all details within each of their personalities. It was also noticeable that the reason most enjoyed the film was because of the high school nostalgia it gave them but in a relatable form of entertainment, a way to look back on and laugh. With this information it is noticeable that most people who disliked the film were people who couldn’t relate to it or took the stereotyping to heart.

Market research

If I were to do market research for the film The Duff, the first thing I would do would be test screenings. Test screening are screenings of a film before it’s properly released to the public. The purpose of this is to observe an audience's reaction to ensure the movie is ready for its global debut. The audience is also usually requested to fill in a survey after watching the film, the producers and directors use this as feedback.
